The Dragon

     They could be any old piles of soil, but these mounts are alive. With a sigh, a puff of smoke escapes from the lips of Fuego. It’s easy to forget that the pastel hills in the distance are the mouth of the fire-breathing dragon, Earth. My goal before I leave here is to see the glow of flowing lava. Every night, I check. Every night, I see nothing but the blackness of the heavy fog that veils the beast. Finally, on one of my last nights, way off in the distance, the liquid fire rises and falls amid a shower of sparks. I smile.
Rest easy, Earth.

Images of Semana Santa

     Semana Santa is past but here are some of the striking images of the celebration! The colorful carpets are representative of the palm branches and coats people laid down to cushion the road as Jesus rode into Jerusalem on the donkey. These alfombras (carpets) are made with colored sawdust, flowers, or other creative materials. They cushion the road as Jesus passes by in processions.

A unique use of color

It was for love.

A beautiful use of flowers

This horse doesn't seem too happy to be in the procession.

This picture just about sums up Semana Santa. The people! Jesus! Mary! Antigua!

Arise!

Celestial spirit that doth roll
The heart's sepulchral stone away,
Be this our resurrection day,
The singing Easter of the soul -
O gentle Master of the Wise,
Teach us to say: "I will arise."

Recent Acquisitions

Shopping here is done “chose your own adventure” style. There are an abundance of boutiques, indoor markets, outdoor markets, indigenous shops, street vendors, and the pacas.
The pacas are a phenomenon I should explain. Think of an indoor-outdoor thrift store. The clothes are hung or piled on tables according to their value. For the best deal, you have to do a bit of digging!
The clothes on the tables are between 2Q and 15Q or $0.26 to $1.97. Fun!  They also have a great range of belts, purses, and shoes that vary in price by condition.
Here is what I have acquired lately at the pacas.
My favorite pacas steal…I mean deal…is the purse for 10Q!

A fun outfit!

These, I did not get at the pacas, but I sure do like them :)

Lessons from Good Earth

 A steaming cup of tea is just the thing to relax the body and spirit and a well spoken word is just the thing to inspire the mind.

A Short Story

There was a bug in the shower and I was too afraid to kill it.

So Greta saved me.

Healing

Que es su versículo favorito?” asked  Dr. Sara.
“Salmos 23,” answered the woman.
“Y que dice Salmos 23?” probed the doctor.
The woman hesitated, momentarily confused as to why she was being asked to recite Bible verses during her doctor’s appointment.
“El Señor…” began the doctor.
In a soft and halting speech, the woman continued…

El Señor es mi pastor, nada me falta;
en verdes pastos me hace descansar.
Junto a tranquilas aguas me conduce;
me infunde nuevas fuerzas.
Me guía por sendas de justicia
por amor a su nombre.
Aun si voy por valles tenebrosos,
no temo peligro alguno
porque tú estás a mi lado;
tu vara de pastor me reconforta.
Dispones ante mí un banquete
en presencia de mis enemigos.
Has ungido con perfume mi cabeza;
has llenado mi copa a rebosar.
La bondad y amor me seguirán
todos los días de mi vida;
y en la casa del Señor
habitaré para siempre.

A gentle smile curved my lips as the patient and the doctor worked
through the passage together.
Healing was taking place.

The Lord is my shepherd,
I shall not be in want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters,
he restores my soul.
He guides me in paths of righteousness
for his name’s sake.
Even though I walk
through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
Surely goodness and love will follow me
all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the Lord
forever.

Who let the dogs out?!

Who? Who? Who? WHO?
Brown. Fuzzy. Big. Muscular. Curly. Smooth. White. Slobbery. Grey. Panting. Black. Tiny. Sniffing. Bring on the DOGS!
I was walking to breakfast, enjoying the beautiful morning. The sun was shining and the flowers were brilliant as ever. I was momentarily distracted by a curly little dog happily riding along in a lady’s purse. How cute! She brought her little buddy out for a Sunday walk. A block later, a couple with a couple of frightening dogs crossed the street – a German Shepherd and a Doberman. I arrived at my breakfast destination, a little café called Y…Tu piña también (And…Your pineapple as well:). I enjoyed a refreshing fruit salad with yogurt and granola and a glass of orange juice. Mmm! My next destination was church. Besides having to move off the sidewalk once to give two dogs space to meet each other and two owners space to drag the dogs along, I made it without hassle. I’m not sure what exactly happened while I was in church, but when I came out, I was swimming in dogs. Five Chihuahuas were bumping along in a stroller. A blue-eyed husky was panting in the shade. I have never seen so many dogs in one place in my entire life! Every other person had a dog or three. A few people even had puppies :) My favorite! Apparently a major dog necessities supplier was having a promotion… It was “go out with your dog friend day.” And go out they did.
Hey there Friend!
Agua for the dogs :)
I'm so cool I can walk TWO fluffy dogs!
Making Friends!
This puppy's name is Poofy! Seriously.
Dogs like shopping too!
Sleepy Puppies!
Fuzzy Puppy!
Seen enough dogs in one day? Me too!

Hindrance

It's 8:30pm. I'm in my room listening to the sounds of the street below. My keyboard is clicking away to the beat of the Spanish flowing from my mind. It's a slow rhythm that threatens to lull me to sleep but the hard wooden chair isn't allowing dreaming tonight. A few more sentences...a few pages later...my bed awaits. A strange feeling washes over me. My eyes itch. My breath grows short...

ACHOOOOOO!

I need a Kleenx. Bad. An instant waterfall from my nose forces me to jump from my chair. I grasp wildly at a roll of toilet paper on the table. Relief.

Unfortunately, this is a nightly occurrence. I sit at the that table and work diligently. I try my best to conquer my assignments. It's just such a hindrance to be allergic to homework!

The Cross

This is how God showed his love for us: God sent his only Son into the world so we might live through him.

This is the kind of love we are talking about—not that we once upon a time loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as a sacrifice to clear away our sins and the damage they've done to our relationship with God.

My dear, dear friends, if God loved us like this, we certainly ought to love each other.

No one has seen God, ever. But if we love one another, God dwells deeply within us, and his love becomes complete in us—perfect love!

Adventures in the Bathroom

     The last 24 hours have provided much entertainment in the bathroom area. Too much.
     First, Mothers, teach your sons to flush the potty. No one wants to encounter someone else’s logs.
     Second, the underwear in the shower…next time Mr. Jock works out, I hope he leaves his “panties” to dry in his room. And for his sake, he’ll have a less pepperminty workout the next day if they dry in his room instead of in public territory ;)
     Third, even though the unwelcome undies were in the shower, I decided to ignore them for the most part and enjoy a relaxing wash. It sure was refreshing! There was no hot water whatsoever, a common occurrence in Guatemala. Brrr!
     Fourth, the unwanted guest.

Problem

...

Problem Solved!

     Fifth, the poo on the piso. Someone missed the toilet. Need I say more?

*End note: None of these occurrences are due to my lovely roommate Greta. There are a few others who share our bathroom whom we are excited to be rid of. Also, Mom, I love my soap!
